This is a true story. A few weeks ago, our water delivery man was in our office resupplying us with water for our cooler. He apologized for being a day late but he had attended his nephew’s funeral. His nephew was 34 with a wife and children. He explained that his nephew had been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and had been fitted for a CPAP. The night he died, he was not wearing his CPAP mask. He went to sleep and never woke up.
It has been estimated that 20 million Americans have Obstructive Sleep Apnea and only 20% of those have been diagnosed. That means 4 million people. It is also estimated that of those 4 million people with Sleep Apnea, 50% of them do not wear their CPAP because they are CPAP Intolerant. That means 2 million people like the young man in this article “know” they have a potentially life threatening condition but choose not to follow the treatment prescribed. They are playing Russian Roulette with their lives.
If you are one of these people, there are other options than a CPAP. Not everyone can wear a CPAP. You need to talk to your physician about those options and find one that works for you.
As a Dental Sleep Medicine specialist, I can help you find a sleep apnea treatment that works for you. Whether it is:
- an Oral Appliance
- a combination of an Oral Appliance and the CPAP
- surgical procedures such as the Palatal Pillows
- or Bariatric Surgery for weight loss.
You don’t really have the option to do “nothing” if you want to live a longer and healthier life.
