Snoring Treatment Corpus Christi
There are hundreds of snoring treatments out there that range from folk remedies such as Lavender aromatherapy to more clinically proven treatments such as oral dental appliances for sleep apnea that also treat snoring
Here are some basic preventative measures that you can take to help curb your snoring:
- Make sure that you have a good air way. If you have allergies, take decongestants on a regular basis as prescribed by a physician. If you have asthma, use a preventative inhaler such as Advair or Flovent.
- Avoid alcohol in the evenings.
- Use snoring strips like Breathe Right®. Snoring strips are actually pretty effective for over-the-counter treatment, and are a good first order of treatment for snoring. Snoring strips can increase airways by up to 25%.
- Sleep on your side rather than on your back. This keeps the weight of your neck’s soft tissues from collapsing the airway.
If none of those stop the snoring, don’t despair. There are other snoring treatment options.
Oral Appliance Therapy
By far, the most effective snoring treatment for most patients, oral appliances not only stop snoring, they treat sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disease that the majority of snorers suffer from, oral sleep apnea appliances work by advancing the jaw into a neuromuscularly balanced position, thereby opening the airway.
Weight Loss and Snoring
Being overweight can cause snoring. The fat that can accumulate in the neck compresses the airway, and then fat deposits in the throat itself can start vibrating. If you’ve gained weight and started to snore, the healthy way to treat your snoring is to lose the weight. Having said that, Dr. Lowrance has seen very few patients that have successfully lost enough weight on their own to stop snoring and resolve their obstructive sleep apnea. For patients whose main cause of sleep apnea is obesity, Dr. Lowrance may refer them to a bariatric (weight loss) surgeon.
Surgical Treatments for Snoring
Oral sleep apnea/snoring appliances will not work well if the tonsils and adenoids are closing off the airway. If the root cause of your snoring is an overabundance of soft tissue in the throat, Dr. Lowrance may recommend surgery. In those cases, Dr. Lowrance will refer you to an ENT specialist who can remove the tonsils and adenoids, or in some cases, the uvula.
Final Non-Option for Snoring Treatment: Do Nothing
Being that snoring is the number one indicator of sleep apnea, a potentially life threatening disease, ignoring your snoring is the worst treatment option. See a sleep apnea dentist as soon as possible to get rid of your snoring and live a happier, healthier life.
